💡 FAQ: Remote Programming, Retrofits & Workshop Visits
Are you planning an LCI conversion, need a new control unit, or want to have coding done, but are still unsure about the process? Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about our services and retrofits.
1. How does remote programming work and what do I need for it?
Many software adjustments, codings, or the teaching-in of control units can be conveniently done remotely – your BMW simply stays in your garage.
What you need for the remote appointment:
-
A standard laptop with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
-
A vehicle-specific OBD / ENET cable (suitable for your E-, F-, or G-model).
-
A battery charger for your vehicle (important so that the on-board voltage does not drop during the flashing process).
-
The free software TeamViewer (we will send you the download link in advance).
Process: You connect the laptop to the car, open TeamViewer, and we take over the programming safely and professionally from a distance.
2. What happens to the programming if my BMW needs to go to the workshop?
That depends on the scope of the workshop work. If the manufacturer (e.g., during a service or recall) performs a comprehensive software update, subsequent codings or programmings can be overwritten.
Our promise to you: If an update deletes your programming, we will restore it free of charge for up to 12 months after the original appointment! After that, we offer restoration at a heavily reduced price.
Tip: It's best to contact us briefly before an upcoming workshop visit, then we'll be aware.
3. What does "Plug & Play" mean for your wiring harnesses?
At Kabelwerk7, we stand for clean solutions – without tinkering and without cut cables. Our vehicle-specific wiring harnesses (e.g., for Iconic Glow kidneys, LCI climate control panels, or LCI taillights) are simply plugged in between your BMW's original connectors. The system is secure, precisely fitting, and can be 100% retrofitted without a trace at any time (ideal for leased vehicles).
4. How do I find out what optional equipment my vehicle has ex-works?
To find the right retrofit or wiring harness, it is important to know what your BMW has on board ex-works. You can easily and free of charge enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on http://bimmer.work. There you will immediately receive a complete list of your factory equipment (including the important SA codes).
5. My vehicle model or desired conversion is not listed in the shop. What now?
Don't worry! Just because something isn't online doesn't mean we can't implement it. Simply write us your request, including your vehicle data. We are quickly and easily reachable via our Live Chat, WhatsApp, email, or contact form and will individually check what is feasible.
6. Do you also do classic service or repair work on my car?
No, we do not offer normal inspections or oil changes. We have focused 100% on our core competence: electronics, performance modifications, and retrofits. In addition to our BMW-specific electronic solutions, we are an official partner of KW Suspensions (including all subsidiary brands) for high-quality chassis tuning. When it comes to tire and rim conversions, we work closely with selected partner workshops.
7. Do you also offer an on-site service or installations at my home?
Yes, that is possible! If enough appointments come together, we go on a Germany tour once a month and carry out installations directly at our customers' premises. Since route planning is very complex, we charge a travel and service flat rate in advance for these on-site appointments. This serves as security and guarantees both sides a fixed appointment.
8. Special Technical Notes (G60/G61)
Why don't you offer pure coding for Iconic Glow on the G60/G61? This has a safety-related background: On the BMW G60/G61, the light carpet in the sill must also be hardware-retrofitted. If only the software were coded without adapting the hardware, the light carpet would illuminate permanently – i.e., even while driving. This is impermissible in road traffic.
Can I order the hardware for the retrofit from you? No, we currently do not offer the retrofit of the light carpet as a shipping solution. Since the conversion is technically very specific, we carry out this service exclusively on-site at our location or as part of our monthly Germany tour. For this reason, you will not find a direct offer for it in our online shop.
Are you interested in this retrofit? Simply contact us directly for an individual offer and an appointment.
9. How do I book my specific appointment after purchase?
To make the process as simple as possible, we use an exclusive booking system:
-
Calendar Access: After your successful booking in the shop, you will receive a personal access link to our appointment calendar with your confirmation email (or in a separate email after payment is received).
-
Select Appointment: There you will see all available free time slots for remote codings or installation appointments and can reserve your preferred date directly.
-
Confirmation: Once you have chosen the appointment, you will automatically receive a confirmation and, if necessary, a reminder shortly before the appointment.
Note: The calendar is not publicly accessible. It is exclusively available to our customers who have already firmly booked a service or conversion.
📚 Small Kabelwerk7 Glossary (Technical terms simply explained)
So that we all speak the same language when it comes to inquiries:
-
LCI (Life Cycle Impulse): The BMW internal term for a facelift. We offer adapters to easily convert, for example, pre-facelift models to the more stylish LCI taillights.
-
Remote Access: The secure remote control of your laptop by us to make in-depth software adjustments to your vehicle.
-
OBD / ENET: The diagnostic interface in your footwell. Via a special cable, we connect your car to the laptop through it.
-
Control Unit (ECU): The "brains" of your car. When replaced (e.g., after a defect), these often have to be specifically coded and taught-in to your VIN.
-
Repinning: The manual swapping of individual wires in a connector. This is exactly what we save you with our pre-assembled Plug & Play adapters.
